August is marked by numerous historic anniversaries and major national celebrations in Vietnam. Among them, August 19 commemorates three significant events: the triumph of the August Revolution; the Traditional Day of the Vietnam People's Public Security Forces; and the Traditional Day of the Vietnam Chemical Industry. While the chemical industry's traditional day is less widely recognized by the general public, this article highlights its vital significance.
Numerous international observances exist, designated by the United Nations or agencies such as UNESCO, UNEP, and WHO—ranging from World Braille Day, World Cancer Day, Valentine's Day, International Mother Language Day, to World Meteorology Day. These observances raise global awareness for societal, cultural, and environmental causes. However, one cannot find a designated annual international day specifically dedicated to chemistry or chemical engineering, despite the chemical industry's foundational role underpinning modern transportation, construction, advanced materials, healthcare, national defense, and industrial manufacturing.
To honor this field, the United Nations proclaimed 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011), coordinated globally by IUPAC and UNESCO.
Nationally, several countries organize designated chemical awareness weeks. In the United States, National Chemistry Week (NCW) is celebrated annually by the American Chemical Society (ACS), mobilizing over 10,000 volunteers and dozens of chemical corporations.

Chemistry and the chemical industry play an indispensable role in modern life
Similarly, the Royal Society of Chemistry in the UK and the Chemical Institute of Canada have organized chemical awareness initiatives, while Greece has observed National Chemistry Day on March 11 since 1995, coordinated by the Association of Greek Chemists.

On October 24, 2013, the Prime Minister of Vietnam issued Decision No. 1948/QD-TTg, officially designating “August 19 each year as the Traditional Day of the Vietnam Chemical Industry”.
Vietnam's chemical industry originated during the resistance wars, overcoming acute shortages of equipment and materials through remarkable resilience. Chemical cadres and workers achieved monumental milestones, establishing bedrock facilities such as Lam Thao Superphosphate Plant, Viet Tri Chemical Plant, Van Dien Fused Calcium Magnesium Phosphate Plant, and other foundational industrial complexes.
While the Traditional Day is observed annually on August 19, the seminal milestone marking the industry's strategic genesis occurred in 1969. The formal establishment of the General Department of Chemicals on August 19, 1969 laid the groundwork for centralized, strategic development. Over the decade from 1965 to 1975, the chemical sector grew dramatically, with 1975 gross output reaching 2.25 times that of 1965, commissioning 24 newly constructed chemical plants and securing 70% of total sector output.
Over the past 55 years, Vietnam's chemical industry has achieved outstanding milestones, asserting its status as an indispensable pillar in national industrialization and modernization.
As the earliest engineering design institute in the chemical sector (founded in 1967), CECO has proudly accompanied the industry's evolution. Across Vietnam, countless chemical, fertilizer, and petrochemical facilities have been realized with the expertise and dedication of CECO engineers and specialists. This proud heritage remains an enduring inspiration for generations of CECO personnel.
