The Houthis have fired numerous missiles and deployed uncrewed aerial vehicles and drone boats to target maritime shipping lanes in the Red Sea in support of Hamas in its conflict with Israel. This crisis has escalated significantly in recent weeks. The US, the UK, and allied forces responded by launching airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. For safety reasons, many major shipping lines have been forced to suspend operations through the Red Sea route.<\/p>\n<p>Hostilities in the Red Sea have severely impacted lead times and logistics costs for chemicals as ocean freight rates continue to climb.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Alliance for Chemical Distribution (ACD) in the United States, approximately 30% of global maritime container traffic typically transits the Red Sea. However, vessels currently operating between Europe and Asia must reroute around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, extending transit times by an additional 10 to 20 days compared to the route via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.<\/p>\n<p>Against this backdrop, prices for several chemicals and chemical products are beginning to rise, particularly in markets heavily reliant on imported feedstocks, such as Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Since mid-January 2024, global prices for certain chemicals have tripled compared to the previous month. While freight rate increases driven by longer voyage times are justifiable, the ACD reported that some ocean carriers have also raised shipping rates between Asia and the US West Coast, despite these vessels not traversing the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Experts project that longer and costlier shipping routes will continue to strain supply chains and consumers, driving commodity prices higher while market supplies tighten.<\/p>\n<p>When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged several years ago, the global chemical industry initially failed to anticipate its full impact, only panicking when chemical prices across the sector spiked unexpectedly, with container shipping rates in some cases surging from $3,500 to $20,000.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, container freight rates have not yet surged to pandemic-era peaks; however, the eventual outcome will depend on the duration of the hostilities and the extent to which supply chain disruptions propagate across the market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Source: https:\/\/stockbiz.vn\/tin-tuc<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Escalating attacks on Red Sea shipping routes have forced maritime carriers to reroute around Africa, prolonging transit times and inflating freight costs.
